When people are treated differently because of some arbitrary fact about them, they are being discriminated against. Discrimination can be based on skin colour, ethnicity, gender, religion, beliefs, disability, language, age or something else. Racism is discrimination based on skin colour. Institutional discrimination means the processes being applied in an institution exclude a particular group of people – for example, if children can only be taught in English, children who have another first language suffer from insitutional discrimination.
